WordPress Plugins

One of the biggest advantages of WordPress is the plethora of plugins. I had a clear idea what features I would need for a technical blog like easy tables, highlighting code, quick charts, the ability to display math formulas, managing links, managing downloads, a gallery etc.. Knowing what I wanted I set out to find the best plugins for Everville and it took quite some time finding and testing them.

I picked up quite a few additional plugins on the way by browsing other people’s recommendations so I will return the favor.

The following list is a direct result of my personal quest and makes no claim for completeness.

  1. Akismet
  2. Akismet checks your comments against the Akismet web service to see if they look like spam or not.

This plugin came with the WordPress installation and seems to be widely used, I hope this works well so I do not have to resort to Captchas.

  3. Broken Link Checker
  4. This plugin will check your posts, comments and other content for broken links and missing images, and notify you if any are found.

This has proven to be a very useful plugin against dead links for me.

  5. CommentLuv
  6. Reward your readers by automatically placing a link to their last blog post at the end of their comment. Encourage a community and discover new posts.

Everyone likes a link back to their own website or blog.

  7. Contact Form 7
  8. Just another contact form plugin. Simple but flexible.

Found this one very easy to configure and use.

  9. Count Per Day
  10. Visit Counter, shows reads per page, visitors today, yesterday, last week, last months and other statistics.

This plugin collects some simple stats directly through WordPress, Google Analytics might be tougher, bigger, better but personally I find it annoyingly laggy.

  11. Easy Chart Builder
  12. This plugin allows you to easily create charts within your blog by use of shortcodes.

Very nice for some quick, simple and clean charts.

  13. Google XML Sitemaps
  14. This plugin will generate a special XML sitemap which will help search engines to better index your blog.

This is simply a must have for everyone.

  15. Lightbox Plus
  16. Lightbox Plus permits users to view larger versions of images, simple slide shows, videos and content all in an overlay.

Great enhancement over the default image viewing method.

  17. Link Indication
  18. Link Indication applies CSS class attributes to the links (anchor tags) in your posts, pages, and optionally in your comments.

I like the way this helps visualizing where links leads to.

  19. Link Library
  20. The purpose of this plugin is to add the ability to output a list of link categories and a complete list of links with notes and descriptions.

If you have a large amount of links, this is probably the best plugin out there.

  21. Maintenance Mode
  22. Adds a splash page to your blog that lets visitors know your blog is down for maintenance.

Helpful during operations on the open-hearth.

  23. NextGEN Gallery
  24. NextGEN Gallery is a full integrated Image Gallery plugin for WordPress with dozens of options and features.

Best known and widely used image gallery plugin for WordPress.

  25. No Self Pings
  26. Keeps WordPress from sending pings to your own site.

If I link to myself, there is a high probability I know about that already.

  27. Print Friendly & PDF Button
  28. Add the Print Friendly button to your WordPress site. Get beautiful print versions of your site, and help readers save paper and ink. Print Friendly

Although this uses an external site to generate the print friendly layout I am very impressed how well this one works and how useful it is to remove unwanted parts before printing.

  29. Secure WordPress
  30. Secure your WordPress Installation with small functions.

Some useful, automated functions for hardening your install.

  31. Sexy Bookmarks
  32. Adds an attractive social bookmarking menu to your posts, pages, index, or any combination of the three.

I have to admit I am not into social networks so I cannot really judge how useful this actually is.

  33. WordPress Download Monitor
  34. Plugin with interface for uploading and managing download files, inserting download links in posts, and monitoring download hits.

Very useful to manage your downloads and allows to store / display some important data like version, date or type on the download link.

  35. WP-DBManager
  36. Manages your WordPress database.

    Save early, save often

  37. WP-Footnotes
  38. Allows post authors to easily add and manage footnotes in posts.

I like footnotes, they allow to add additional information without actually breaking the reading flow.

  39. WP-PostRatings
  40. Adds an AJAX rating system for your WordPress blog’s post/page.

A simple yet effective way for feedback.

  41. WP-SynHighlight
  42. Plugin provides syntax highlighting for about 116 programming languages via Geshi.

Highlighting code is essential and this plugin does the job very well.

  43. WP-Table Reloaded
  44. WP-Table Reloaded lets you manage tables in a comfortable backend in WP’s admin area, without any knowledge of HTML, and can add valuable features.

CSV import is a real time saver !

  45. WP QuickLaTeX
  46. Allows user to embed LaTeX math into posts and comments without compromising rendering quality.

Uses an external site to render LaTeX expressions into images which are cached on the server.

  47. WP Show IDs
  48. Simple, yet elegant. Shows IDs for Posts, Pages, Media, Links, Categories, Tags, and Users in the admin tables for easy access. Very lightweight.

    Very useful.

  49. Yet Another Related Posts Plugin
  50. Returns a list of related entries based on a unique algorithm for display on your blog and RSS feeds.

Automatically creates internal links to similar content.

Even though I tried to keep it short, this turned into a rather long post. I will keep my eyes open for further additions :)

I’m more than happy to find this great site. I wanted to thank you for your time due to this fantastic read!! I definitely enjoyed every bit of it and I have you saved to fav to see new information in your web site.

  2. After I initially left a comment I seem to have clicked on the -Notify me when new comments are added- checkbox and from
now on every time a comment is added I get 4 emails with the exact same comment.
Perhaps there is an easy method you are able to remove me from that service?
    Thanks!
